Wear A Little Library . . .

Don’t worry – this is a mannequin modeling these – not a woman whose neck is cracking from the effort!

The whimsy of this whole idea just appeals to me – so much so that I bought a pair of book earrings . . . could not resist.

This Etsy artist has a whole line of handmade book jewelry, and lots of handmade books and journals of normal size also – all at very reasonable prices.

All have covers made from vintage leathers which the artist identifies for you – i.e. “ripped from an old chair in Holland”.

Here is a beautiful Journal called “Fetch Elijah” covered in leather from a 1950′s sofa, with an antique key sewn to the front with bookbinding thread, and the inside cover has a piece of a deed from the 1800′s. There’s a story behind the name.

You get the idea.

And I love the philosophy behind this little naked purse journal – that its corners will curl, its naked cover will accumulate grime, and all of that will enhance its value.

The artist is Margaux. She lives in Philadelphia with husband and son.

Pages, the Boutique, Is a Reality!

Yes, yes. I know it has been a whole week since our opening.

I had a strange experience this week. I was actually worn-out from the effort of launching two new stores in 3 months. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I am used to getting away with the over-achiever bit without paying the consequences. I was just plain out of gas. Walking around with the rattling sound of my rear axle dragging behind me.

But, I’m better now and want to give you a taste of what Pages is like.

The philosophy of this store is : “These are a few of my favorite things.” All I have stocked are my favorite supplies in my favorite brands. If I love it, it’s here or will be soon.

Like lots of colors (30) of waxed linen – by the yard:

Like baskets of Panpastels:

Every type of portable watercolors imaginable . . . including the kind that Vivian Swift used to create all the paintings in her book . . . and yes, we carry her book.

And blank journals – beautiful handmade ones by Sharon Hall and Brenda Jacobs . .. and ta-da, the new RED Moleskine Sketchbook too:

And all the mark making tools you could desire for filling these journals:

And stuff for cutting and gluing . . .

And papers, of course. Decorative and the fine stuff like Arches Text Wove and Cover and BFK Rives . . .

I’m not trying to torture those of you who do not live locally. I just want to show you what it’s like in hopes you will visit someday.

And I will be talking about these wonderful products as we go along here in the Pages blog!

Erasers On The Go . . .

Folks have heard me say more than once that an eraser is an artist’s best friend. Sorta like the Undo Key on your computer. It’s a chance for a do over.

So, I have to have erasers in my journal kit. Stocking the new Pages boutique yesterday, I was reminded of one of my favorites – The Faber-Castell Perfection eraser pencil.

I LOVE these things. They sharpen so well in a pencil sharpener (even an electric one) that you can erase details in tiny areas, yet the eraser itself is soft enough not to abrade sensitive surfaces.

Obviously, they fit right in with your pencils in your journaling kit.

Available at Pages and at Dick Blick here:

Now, go feel good about your mistakes.

Book Autopsies

Work on the Pages boutique and exhibition is rolling right along, but we want to take a moment to get our book arts and journaling blog rolling as well.

One thing we will do here as often as possible, is show you awesome examples of book art in its various forms.

Today, we want you to meet Brian Dettmer, whose work is often referred to as book autopsy. He cuts into the contents of books such as encyclopedia volumes to find the components of his new composition.

I don’t have enough of a left brain to even grasp what his process must be. I am just awestruck.

You can see much more work through Brian’s website, which is a little weird because it sends you off to the websites of his galleries to see the work, but that is an adventure as well, because you stumble upon other artists in those galleries. You can entertain yourself for some time!

Welcome to Pages!

What is it?

Pages is a blog dedicated entirely to the Book Arts and Art Journaling.

Pages is a book arts and journaling boutique located just outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our Grand Opening is March 27, 2010.

Pages 2010 is a Books Arts Exhibition and sale to be held in June 2010 – in a huge, 3500 square foot exhibit space near the Pages boutique.

Here is a photo of the exhibit space – currently featuring another art show.

Because of all the beautiful wall space, we have issued a Challenge along with the usual Call for Entries. We will be using tables for display as any book exhibit would, but, we are also challenging you to create books that can hang on a wall and still be appreciated. We are hoping, with book artist’s creativity, we may even see some brand new structures come out of this!

Please come see us Saturday if you live locally, and please download our Call for Entries (left sidebar) for all the details for entries.
