There is almost nothing worse than grabbing the dish cloth or sponge to do a quick kitchen clean-up, only to find that MILDEW has taken up residence.
That smell is so bad AND when it gets on your hands, you have to wash and wash to get rid of it.
It’s a fact. These little buggers are the biggest germ carriers in your kitchen!

Here’s a tip that I learned a few years back when my kids were in health class in high school.
ONE MINUTE in the microwave kills the germs on your kitchen rag and sponge and prevents it from getting that aweful mildew smell.
Once a day (I usually do this in the a.m. when I’m making my coffee/tea), take them both by the scruff . . . and place them in the microwave together – all nice and cozy.

MAKE SURE THEY ARE BOTH WET – otherwise you’re going to burn up the sponge!
Then, simply select ONE MINUTE.

They come out really HOT, so be careful. There you have it. Nice, clean kitchen helpers.

You taught that one to Mark, didn’t you? AT first I just thought he was losin’ it and having sponge with his coffee.
Great idea – I hate the smell of mildew.
i’ve heard this one before but have never tried it. now i will! thanks for the reminder!

cool, thank you
I’d never heard of this – great idea. I think you can also put them in the dishwasher?
Cheryl, my mother-in-law puts hers in the dishwasher. I’m afraid I might not remember to do that each time, so I just got in the habit of using the micro-zapper.
Thanks for the tip. Seems like I’ve heard it but have surely forgotten to apply it!
I found the solution for my smelly dishcloths by laying them on the top rack of my dishwasher during a wash cycle. You can buy detergent that has bleach in it, to really kill the germs.
